Discovery Resource Kits are available in the Service Center Library or by contacting Emily Stanley- estanley@riverbluffs.org . Each kit contains a lesson plan and most of the items that you will need to complete the activities. Kits are available for 2 week checkout times, and require a $ 20 returnable deposit in addition to the usage fee. Kits can be reserved ahead of time; please contact Emily for more details.
Just how do I use one?
Use a Discovery Kit at a Troop Meeting…Most of the activities in a kit can be completed in 1-2 hours. Some activities take girls outdoors, but many are indoors based. The kits include most of what you need to complete the activities required for the listed Try-Its, badges or Interest Projects (IPs).
Use a Discovery Kit on a Campout…Take advantage of the time you have together and allow the girls to discover new skills or subjects. Is it predicted to rain? Take the Weather Watch kit with you and your Juniors will learn how the weatherman knows when and where the weather will be good.
Use a Discovery Kit for Day Camp or Camporees…Need a station or activity for girls who are at your event? Check out a MEGA kit, which has all age level activities, many for the great outdoors. Learn about nighttime critters and ease the girls’ fear of the dark with the Night Hike kit, or do some fantastic activities to supplement your star gazing with the SPACE kit!
Use a Discovery Kit for Try-Its, badges and Interest Projects…Almost everything you need to do a Try-It or badge session is included in this box. The supplied guide gives you step by step instructions to help your troop complete Try-It and badge requirements. The Discovery MEGA kits include IP requirements as well. Any of the Discovery Kits can be checked out by older girls and Juliettes to help complete leadership hours and IP service project requirements.
Use a Discovery Kit to discover…Let girls discover the world around them by doing experiments and building models. With minimal guidance and input from you, watch girls discover principles of science and math through fun games and hands on activities. Use the new Build UP kit to learn about civil engineering through model building and design. These kits make learning new skills fun and exciting!
Use a Discovery Kit to connect…Girls use the inquiry based sessions to connect to the world around them. Daisies do activities from Busy Bee and then can tell a parent or friend about bees when they see them instead of screaming and running away. Use a kit before making a field trip to the zoo or nature center, and be amazed as your girls remember and recall information they learned from the kit!
Use a Discovery Kit to take action…The kits and their included guides make for a great foundation for Girl Scouts working with younger troops. Use the kit to lead a meeting or an activity, or take elements of the kits and make up your own! Girls who complete the Reduce Reuse Recycle Kit will feel empowered to make changes in the amount of trash they produce or find better ways to recycle and reuse troop supplies.
