Geocaching

Want to try some high tech navigation? Even if you haven’t mastered the compass, you can use Global Positioning Satellite technology to find your way. Units are provided for the duration of the program, which will include basic navigation, operation and finding caches. Finding Your Way badge, High Tech Hide and Seek IP. MIN 6 MAX 24 *Deposit Required. Juniors & GS 11-17 only

Worm Composting

Vermiculture. It’s a cool word, and an even cooler way to cut down on the amount of garbage going into the landfill. We will make a vermicomposter, and learn about worms, the secret to good compost and a healthy environment. This program is $15.00 per girl to cover additional supplies/materials. Juniors & GS 11-17 only MIN 5 MAX 25

Illinois Birds

Using pictures, books, a bird call CD and a nature hike, we will work together to familiarize the girls with birds they might encounter by sight or sound Watching Wildlife Try It, Wildlife badge, All About Birds Interest Project. MIN 8 MAX 25

Wildlife Wonders

We will get close up and personal with everyday wildlife through binoculars, magnifiers and even a microscope! Try observing earthworms, analyzing bird nests and more! Girls Scouts 11-17 participating in this event will take home plaster casts of tracks, wildlife journals/sketchbooks Watching Wildlife Try-it Wildlife badge, Wildlife Interest Project MIN 8 MAX 25

Plants, Trees and Ephemerals

Take nature hikes and learn how to identify the wildflowers that bloom among us. In addition, we will do leaf rubbings, seed sorting and other fun activities that take advantage of the constantly changing environment. Plants Try-It, Plants and Animals badge, Plant Life Interest Project. MIN 8 MAX 25

Frogs and Toads

If you have been overnight camping, or even near a forest or a lake during early morning or evening hours, chances are you’ve heard a chorus of frogs and toads. We can teach the girls how to identify frog and toad calls and in some cases imitate them. Where do frogs and toads start their lives? What exactly happens to a tadpole when it becomes a frog? Water Everywhere and Watching Wildlife Try-It, Water Fun and Wildlife badges, Wildlife and Eco-Action IPs.

Freshwater Fish

What kind of fish are you most likely to catch? Just how do you catch a fish – is it mean? More importantly, what will you do once you’ve hooked a fish? We will teach the girls how to handle live fish, how to bait and cast and
