O.A.R. Day Camp and Service Unit Event Options
** PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE ** Revised 12/19/2006
|
All costs include program instruction, program supplies (where noted), equipment reservation and certified, experienced facilitators for the time indicated. To extend a session, facilitators are available at an hourly rate of $10 per facilitator. This extension must be arranged beforehand with the Outdoor Program Manager.
Facilitators will leave at the end of the reserved time. They do not have the option of staying later to provide additional program sessions unless previously arranged by the OPM, so please do not ask them. The Camp Director or Service Unit Event Manager is responsible for making sure the correct numbers of girls participate in sessions.
Activities are listed by time blocks per session. Because of the nature of some activities, more time is required for a safe and quality experience for the girls. If you find that a session time is too long for your event, contact the Outdoor Program Manager to see if a shorter time can be arranged. No session can be shorter than two hours, however.
2 hour block: Archery: One facilitator for 10 girl shifts, each shift lasting ½ hour. If you choose 2 facilitators, you can have the non shooting group instructed on proper stance and equipment while the other group is shooting. This option can be used to earn the OAR Archery Passport quarter from the Outdoor Passport. Groups will rotate after a half hour. Facilitators are hired by two hour time increments. This means 40 girls can have program level appropriate archery instruction and shoot in a two hour time period when two facilitators are hired. The cost for this option is $250. For one facilitator, another adult must be present to keep the non shooters from entering the range. Girls will be given a brief instruction on how to stand and shoot, and then allowed to fire at targets for a half hour. 40 Girls can rotate in this session. The cost for this option is $200.
2 hour block: Fishing: License is required for any participant 16 or older. Equipment is not available at this time. One facilitator can instruct 10 girls, but more adults may be needed for Safety Wise ratios as watchers. Depending on availability of program equipment, girls can participate in demonstrations and waterfront activities like baiting a hook, different fish species identification, how to handle a live fish, and minnow fishing. Each session lasts an hour, and one facilitator can accommodate 10 girls. For a one facilitator option, 20 girls can be accommodated. The cost is $200. Again, depending on equipment availability, two facilitators can be scheduled to run sessions that can accommodate 40 girls total per two hour session. This option cost is $250
2 hour block: Hiking: Different theme/interest hikes are available, such as camp history, bird, wildflower and track hikes. Contact the OPM for activities that can be customized for your particular event theme. One facilitator can accommodate 25 girls, and one adult must accompany each group as well. The facilitator can provide program materials, such as a scavenger hunt list or field guides on loan to enrich the hike for the girls. Each hiking session lasts one hour, so 50 girls can be accommodated by one facilitator session. The cost for this session option is $200. If you bring in an additional facilitator, groups can be staggered and the session can accommodate 100 girls per two hour session. The cost for this option is $250.
2 hour block: Sailing: Two facilitators can accommodate 10 girls per session. Girls will need to take turns in the boats. This session will familiarize girls with the mechanics of sailing, and include badge and IPP activities. Girls will then be able to take the sailboats out on the lake in pairs and experiment with what they learn. Each session lasts 2 hours, and because of equipment restrictions, cannot accommodate more girls. The time can be extended (see above). The cost is $250 per session.
2 hour block: Swimming: One trained lifeguard facilitator can accommodate 25 girls, with additional adult help as watchers per Safety Wise. This session can be used to complete Try-It and badge activities. For over 25 girls, another lifeguard facilitator is required, with a maximum of 50 girls swimming for one two hour session. For 25 and fewer girls, the cost for this option is $200. For 26 to 50 girls, the cost is $250. This time can be extended, as long as Safety Wise and American Red Cross Lifeguard requirements are met.
3 hour block: Rock Climbing: One facilitator can have 10 girls per session. Sessions last 1 ½ hours each to ensure every girl participating has a safe and fun experience climbing. At least two adults are needed per session to serve as anchors. Climbers will be scaling up a wall and rappelling back down. Girls will be taught the proper commands and when to use them in addition to how to tie two of the knots necessary to climb. This session can accommodate 20 girls. The cost of this session is $200. Because of equipment and location restrictions, there is not an option to have more than one facilitator conduct this session to accommodate more girls. The time can be extended (see above).
3 hour block: Canoeing: One facilitator for 12 girls. Girls will take double up in canoes, depending on equipment availability. If you choose 2 facilitators, the non canoeing group can have detailed instruction on paddling, parts of the canoe, and other Try-It, badge or IPP specific program components. This can last a half hour, and can accommodate 72 girls. The cost for this option is $300. For one facilitator, another adult must be present to keep other girls from entering the water or touching the equipment. Girls will be given a brief instruction on paddling technique and allowed to explore an area of the lake for a half hour. 72 girls can rotate in this session. The cost for this option is $200.
3 hour block: Team Building Sampler: One facilitator can accommodate 25 girls per one hour game session. Additional adults will be needed for Safety Wise. Girls will play some team building games and puzzles that are completely different from the Team Challenge Course games and puzzles. No patches will be provided for this session, since it is not considered a full team building program. These games are very organized and only slightly competitive. Girls are encouraged to support and encourage one another, and are allowed to chose not to participate in a game or puzzle. If you are at Camp Torqua, please be advised that the Team Course will not be used for this session. A total of 75 girls can be rotated through this session using one facilitator. The cost for this option is $250. Additional facilitators can be added to accommodate more girls in separate simultaneous sessions if space is available. The cost for 2 facilitators is $350.
4 hour block: Geocaching: Working with the Outdoor Program Manager, you can have a course set up at your event location, provided the agency renting the property (if not Girl Scouts) approves the temporary placement of caches on the property. 6-12 units are available for rent depending on availability and a deposit of $103 per unit is required in addition to the session cost. Upon return of the units to the facilitator, $100 per unit will be returned. The additional cost of $3 per unit goes to cover battery replacement an unit maintenance. Girls will be familiarized with the units, and allowed to buddy up and find the caches, with two to four girls per unit. The facilitator will be supervising placement and retrieval of the caches, but extra adults will be needed for Safety Wise ratios (see Hiking, p88) during the session. The cost for this session is $300, which includes program materials (other than the units) and can accommodate 24 girls per hour long session for a total of 96 girls.
