Service Unit Spotlight:

Effingham 611 Service Unit

This unit is hopping! They planned a back-to-school family carnival at Camp Wassatoga this past September. All the troops manned a booth and the girls and their siblings had fun playing the various carnival games. Parents could talk with leaders and find just the right troop for their daughter. Moving from there, they’ve planned a Passport Around the World to celebrate Thinking Day. Each troop is choosing a country and will have displays, crafts, and food samples from around the world. What a great way to learn more about our sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all around the world. Now if that isn’t enough, they are having a Powder Puff Derby. The troops are ordering the Derby car kits, decorating them and then will have races all day at a local mall. This will give the girls the chance to be creative, competitive, and make new friends at the event. Two volunteers, Kim Mills and Dawn Quicksall have volunteered to head up the first River Bluffs Day Camp in this area this summer. They are already planning the week long event and excited about this new opportunity at Camp Wassatoga in their backyard.

Last but not least, the unit contributed to the local FISH food bank by sewing Christmas stockings that toys are put into and distributed with the holiday food bank. Troops make and decorate hundreds of stockings! They had some help with the sewing from the local sewing guild who set up a day that the girls could come and sew. These wonderful ladies were there to help with any questions or problems. The sewing guild and the girls had a wonderful and fulfilling day.
