River Bluffs Council Presents

Troop Spotlight

Service Unit 101 Alton/Godfrey

Group Troop #707 St. Mary’s School

Cathy McNamee, Leader

Chrisi McNamee, Co-Leader

What makes troop 707 a little different than most? They are made up of 48 girls from Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, & 4th grades. The plans this troop has for the upcoming membership year are extraordinary. In addition to earning their Petals, Try-Its, and badges, they have numerous outside activities planned. The troop will be participating in two service projects, area Christmas caroling, the service unit "Bring a Buddy" bowling event, and a mother-daughter camping trip. Each program level within the troop will be attending age specific activities as well. Some of these events include: Sports Day, Young Chefs Academy, Children’s Museum, Snooze at the Zoo, and camping experiences.

How does this troop accomplish so much? Organization, communication, and parental involvement are essential. Spreadsheets and other files are maintained reflecting the troop schedules, rosters, and other pertinent information. Open communication, updates, and reminders occur frequently and efficiently through e-mail. Most importantly, a minimum of one parent has volunteered to represent each program level at every meeting. The meeting plans are created by leadership, but implemented by the parents.

Thanks to troop 707 for being great representatives of Girl Scouting and thanks to Cathy and her crew for being phenomenal examples of leadership!

Volunteer Spotlight:

Mary Lucas, Service Unit 111

Twin Echo Group Troop 56

Mary Lucas’ involvement started with Girl Scouts as a girl. She recalls her troop doing many camping activities which initiated her love of the outdoors. More recently, she decided to get her daughter involved in a troop. For the first year, they commuted to be involved with a troop at a neighboring school, because Twin Echo did not have a troop. After the initial year, Mary decided that she would take on the responsibility of leadership, so other girls at her daughter’s school could have the a Girl Scouting experience. For the past

three years, she has been a troop leader of a group troop, which

currently encompasses first through fourth grades. With organization, planning, and parental assistance, Mary is able to meet the challenge of accommodating all interested girls at Twin Echo as well as providing an option for girls that do not have a

troop affiliated with their school.

Her involvement in the organization continues to grow. Last year, she organized a service unit "Bring a Buddy" skating event. She

continued that tradition this year as well as volunteering to plan the service unit Thinking Day event. In August, she volunteered to fill the service unit registrar vacancy. Her enthusiasm and positive attitude make her an irreplaceable asset to Girl Scouts.

Thanks Mary for all you do!
