"Bake a
Difference" with Girl Scout involvement in Spread the Bread
Spread the Bread
is a community service project where Girl Scouts bake bread for those in need, such as seniors, shelter residents and food pantry consumers. Spread the Bread is a national grassroots organization whose mission is to nurture children’s innate generosity with the goal of sparking a life-long commitment to helping others. Children are provided with opportunities to practice volunteerism by baking bread and offering it to those in need. Bread recipients are given a homemade loaf of bread and the message that they have been remembered. For bakers and recipients, "bread-spreading" promotes respect for the importance and dignity of each member of society.
If your troop is interested in the Spread the Bread community service project and the corresponding Spread the Bread Girl Scout patch program check out their website at www.spreadthebread.org for patch requirements.
Join the Sisterhood of the Traveling Apron
Spread the Bread is calling all Girl Scout leaders to help them pilot a really fun project for their Million Break Bake. They are launching the new Sisterhood of the Traveling Apron contest – Yes, it’s a knock off on the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants! J
They will send you the apron. Girls are asked to participate in the bread project, and once the project is finished all the girls are asked to sign the apron with a short upbeat message. Girls will need to write small because they are trying to get as many signatures on the apron as possible. Once the apron is ready to travel, they will send you the address of another Girl Scout troop that is participating in the bread project.
Once they receive notification that the apron is completely covered in bread signatures, front and
back, they will pull a name at random from all the girls that signed the apron and that girl will WIN the Sisterhood of the Traveling Apron to keep, treasure, hold and bake with!
More information about Spread the Bread and the Million Bread back can be found at www.spreadthebread.org Girls at all program levels can also earn a Spread the Bread service learning patch by completing suggested activities. On the website there is a Bread Starter kit for Girl Scouts.
