TROOP SPOTLIGHT:  Senior Troop 771, Leader Carolyn Oesterle, Service Unit 106: Troop 771 from Bethalto, IL, had a very creative way of selling cookies this year. Instead of going door to door and asking people if they would like buy cookies from them, they asked people if they would buy cookies for soldiers serving overseas. The girls were met with a very positive response. They went one step further and set up a letter writing campaign, writing to over 20 celebrities asking them to buy cookies for soldiers as well. Altogether, the girls sent 287 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to soldiers serving overseas. Way to go, Girls!

Attention Leaders!  This is a reminder that when you register your troop to attend a council sponsored program and you have girls that are not able to attend that event (regardless of the reason) supplies, patches and/or awards for that particular program will not be given to the leader for that girl.

Service Project Opportunity - Cedar Ridge HealthCare, in Lebanon, is looking for girls to work with their residents. Play games, do crafts, plant flowers, etc. If this sounds like something your troop would be interested in doing contact Tina Ward, Activity Director, at 537-6165.

Day Camp 2008 Reminder...The GSRBC Day Camp program information was included in the Spring/Summer issue of the COMPASS as a yellow insert. This insert has all the details and registration forms for Day Camp. Please review these opportunities with your troop and encourage them to come to camp in 2008! Your girls should have received this information in late February or early March.

All camps are in need of adult volunteers to help staff their camps. Please contact the Day Camp Director for more information on the volunteer positions that are available.

Girl Scout Travels Into Space! This fall Belleville’s own astronaut Sandy Magnus, will be returning to space for an extended stay on the International Space Station. Dr. Magnus was a girl member in River Bluffs Council! She attended Central Junior High and Belleville West before

"launching" her career as an engineer. She has a Bachelor’s degree in physics, a master’s degree in electrical engineering and earned a doctorate from the School of Material Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Magnus is scheduled to lift off on Sept 18, 2008, depending on the weather and will return to Earth in October. During her time on the space station, she will serve as flight engineer and NASA science officer and will conduct experiments and complete research. Mark this date on your calendar and plan to watch with your girls.

This trip is also special for Girl Scouts of River Bluffs Council. On her flight, Dr. Magnus will carry a Girl Scouts of River Bluffs Council flag. She will take this flag into space and fly it!!! Girls at the DISCOVER E program made cards that will be sent to wish Dr. Magnus the best of luck on her flight! Just imagine one of your girls could be the next Sandy Magnus!
